Union Education Minister Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ and Union Minister WCD and Textiles Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani jointly launched Toycathon-2021 on 05 January 2021. Shri Praveen Kumar, Secretary, Prof. Anil Sahasrabudhe, Chairman, AICTE and Dr Abhay Jere, Chief Innovation Officer, MoE were present on the launch event of Toycathon-2021. The Union Ministers also jointly launched the Toycathon Portal on the occasion. This Toycathon is aimed to conceptualize innovative toys based on the Indian value system which will inculcate the positive behavior and good value among the children.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Pokhriyal said that Toycathon is being organized to develop India as the global Toy manufacturing hub. He said size of toy market in India is about one billion USD but unfortunately 80% of the toys are imported. The launch of Toycathon today, is an endeavor by the government to create an ecosystem for the domestic Toy industry and the local manufacturers, tapping the untapped resources and utilizing their potential. Recalling the vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi of 5 trillion-dollar economy and considering the huge potential of our toy market, he exhorted all to make India ‘Atmanirbhar’ in Toy industry. He further stated that National Education Policy-2020 also lays emphasis on innovation and research in learning, starting from the primary education. Aligned with the goals of National Education Policy, the Toycathon aims to capture innovative prowess of 33 crores students across the country, he added.

Addressing a press conference Smt. Smriti Z Irani stated that India imports 80 per cent of toys and the government is working towards promoting the indigenous toy industry for making the country self-reliant in this sector. She said that the collaboration with Ministry of Education paves the way for the students, faculties from all schools, colleges and universities of the country to answer to the clarion call of Atmanirbhar Bharat though this Toycathon. Appreciating the initiative, the Minister said, “This is the first time when school children will innovate, design and conceptualize toys also for especially abled ‘divyang children’. The Minister informed that students and faculty members participating in Toycathon can get prizes upto 50 lakhs. Commerce Ministry and MSME Ministry have taken various steps to protect the toy manufacturing industry and to make it competitive and to create awareness about safe toys which are not harmful chemically, Ministry of Education and Ministry of WCD will adopt special measures, she said.


About Toycathon 2021

Taking a giant leap in the path of becoming ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD), Ministry of Textile, Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Ministry of MSME, Ministry of I&B and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) have jointly launched Toycathon-2021. This is a special kind of hackathon where students and teachers from schools and colleges, design experts, toy experts and startups will get together to crowd source ideas for developing toys and games that are based on Indian culture and ethos, local folklore and heroes, and Indian value systems. While this will greatly help India develop into a global hub for toys and games, it will also help our children to understand the ethos and values of Indian culture as envisaged in the National Education Policy 2020.

The Toycathon will have 3 variants of tracks of Junior Level, Senior Level and Start up Level and will allow participation of students and teachers from schools, colleges and universities apart from startups and toy experts. Participants will have two options for idea submission; they can either submit ideas for the published problem statements or under novel toy concepts category. This is the high time we utilize brightest creative minds and carve out games based on our Indian culture, tradition and heritage and stories of ancient India showcasing the beliefs and traditions of people.

Introduction Toycathon Portal

India, despite being a home of many globally popular games like Chess, Ludo, Snakes and Ladders, is not among leading developers and manufacturers of toys. Under the ‘AatmaNirbhar Bharat Abhiyan’ initiated by our Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri. Narendra Modi, Toycathon-2021 is conceived to challenge India’s innovative minds to conceptualize novel Toy and Games based on Bharatiya civilization, history, culture, mythology and ethos. Toycathon 2021 is an inter-ministerial initiative organized by Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell with support from All India Council for Technical Education, Ministry of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Ministry of MSME, Ministry of Textiles and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Currently, India’s toy market stands at around 1.5 Billion USD, which primarily is dominated by imported toys. Moreover, majority of these toys do not represent Indian heritage, civilization and value systems.

Toycathon 2021 is a unique opportunity for Students, Teachers, Start-ups and Toy experts/professionals in India to submit their innovative toys/games concepts and win large number of prizes worth Rs. 50 lakhs. Winners of Toycathon 2021 will also get an opportunity to showcase their concepts during ‘National Toy Fair’ starting 27th Feb which will be attended by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Moreover, efforts will be made to commercialize the exceptional toy concepts will support from Industry and investors.

  • Toy/Games concepts based on Indian civilization, heritage, culture, mythology, history, ethos, technology, ethnicity, national heroes and important events .
  • Inculcate positive behavior and good values(‘Sanskaar’).
  • Toys for specially-abled/ Divyang children.
  • Boosting physical and mental fitness.
  • Using eco-friendly, indigenous, non-hazardous or recycled material.

  • Supporting missions like Swatch Bharat, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Environment Conservation, Climate Change, Digital India, Skill India, Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.

  • Toys for pedagogy (for teaching student's difficult concepts in Math, Science, Languages, Social Sciences, etc.)

Hackathon Process

Launch of Toycathon 2021

Toycathon 2021 is launched in a press conference at the hands of Hon’ble Minister of Textiles and WCD, Smt. Smriti Irani and Hon’ble Minister of Education, Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ on 5th January, 2021 at 2 p.m. On 5th January, 2021 at 5 p.m. Toycathon portal is started for idea submission. Participants can start registration process by 5th January

Registration and Idea Submission

Participants should take a look at the problem statements given under themes tab on the home page. If a problem statement seems suitable to you and you have an idea for a toy/game on it, you should prepare the remaining requirements in the form and submit the idea in the prescribed format. The last date of submission of ideas is 20th January, 2021.

Phase 1 – Online Scrutiny

An online scrutiny by a team of expert evaluators will begin as soon as the ideas are submitted. The evaluators shall judge your idea based on predetermined criteria. Based on the scrutiny, which will continue till 8th February, 2021 a list of shortlisted teams for Grand Finale will be declared on 12th February.

Phase 2 - Grand Finale - Physical Mode

Grand Finale will take place at a Nodal Center or an ATL near you. You along with your team and mentors will report there on 23rd February, 2021 as per the schedule given. The manufacturing/ prototyping activity will go on over 23rd-25th February, 2021 slot as per the schedule for different tracks. There will be numerous mentoring and evaluation sessions in this time period.

Declaration of Results

Based on the scrutiny in the Grand Finale, the best ideas selected to receive prizes and for online presentation in Toy Fair will be declared.
